Historian Ong Hok Ham: Life Just Stopped Happy

When I first been to the home of historian Ong Hok Ham, I got greeted by barking puppies. In those days, about 13 years back, I got still a sophomore in the initial FIB UI Record Research Program and didn't know much. Ong got long retired as a UI Background Department lecturer while i went to and his life have been reinforced by a wheelchair because of attack that experienced struck since 2001.

Ong was indeed a puppy lover.

In the home, he has four tails. Among the things I recall most was Tuyul. I don't really know what race your dog is, but surely it offers dark brown scalp and Ong really enjoys it.

I assume, the name of your dog was presented with because Ong had written many times about tuyul while skinning the superstitions behind it. The tuyul misconception in Javanese population, relating to Ong, arose because of suspicion and cultural jealousy of stores who could easily get rich suddenly.

One day, as i was going to Ong's house, came up JJ Rizal, my older was in the annals Office, with Yahya Andi Saputra, who was simply also my mature. Rizal are the owners of a publisher that has specialized in publishing background catalogs. The name of the publisher is weird: Bamboo Community. Incidentally, Rizal and Yahya are Betawi people.

Rizal emerged to Ong's house to care for publishing Ong's assortment of writings in Celebrity Weekly publication in the 1950s. The collection e book was later printed out in 2005 under the titleHistory of Chinese language Peranakans in Java .

Just when he moved into the home, Rizal immediately greeted Ong while speaking, "Mr. Ong, I'm here with Yahya, a past college student of Pak Ong. He's a Betawi. Mr. Ong still remembers, right? "

" Yes, Yahya. I still bear in mind, "Ong answered.

"But he doesn't desire to be reported to be a descendant of slaves," Rizal said.

Rizal said that as a tale discussing the classic review of Lance Castles entitled "The Cultural Account of Djakarta" (PDF). In paperwork shared in Indonesian journals(1967) posted by Cornell College or university, Castles figured one of the communities who became the ancestors of the Betawi individuals were slaves who have been deployed by the VOC to create Batavia. Castles' view is indeed difficult and many reports have compared it. But as a tale, of course he's very soft.

Ong then captured Rizal's jokes in his own way.

"If you're not really a descendant of any slave, then what's the offspring? Descendants of pet dogs? "Said Ong while tossing food at Tuyul and his friends.

Rizal and Yahya said, however the encounters of both of these viewed sour as these were.

Ong: Misconception and Reality

Ong's house is Cipinang, East Jakarta, in the property organic of the Indonesian Journalists Relationship (PWI). In comparison to other properties on either part, Ong's house appears the most grim and the most unique.

Ong built the home from the various tools employed by the old house or building that he rushed to the inside of East Java. A home window structure from teak hardwood, for example, originates from an official's house which is dismantled; the key door is the hunt from the home of any priyayi bankrupt; or a 19th-century seat from a flea market. Never to ignore, he also accumulated several Chinese traditional jars which some said were from the Ming Dynasty.

But there is something more brilliant: his private bathroom doesn't have a door. In the event that you are actually going to when the variety is going for a shower and unintentionally goes inside, you will notice a middle-aged man with skinny naked head of hair while kungkum within an ancient bathtub.

Ong like attempting to keep up with the image as an "outside the house" historian, before house and everything the furniture are required to follow its antiquity likes . In order that Ong built a misconception of himself and he really savored it.

With such a home and early on 20th-century Dutch design of life encircled by servants -- Ong always placed two and three servants who have been all male -- he often asked friends or students to get back. The primary program is of course eating and taking in. Dialogue or serious speak about history is merely a sideline.

Regarding eating, Ong is definitely a great champ. He loves to eat well, is also proficient at cooking. Those people who have tasted Ong's food don't acknowledge taste. But normally they state that in conditions of preparing this person "has taste".

"There are just a couple of things I enter America: a doctorate ever sold and food preparation skills. I am more pleased with the next one, "said one of the famous Ong phrases that Goenawan Mohamad once handled on in the benefits to the assortment of the Lost Revelation essays , the Disturbed Country (2003).

So is the problem of refreshments. Ong hardly ever lets his friends get back with dried up throats. He jolted them with whiskey or wines.

He's also a partygoer who's often asked to embassy receptions or Jakarta elites. That is where Ong discovers his world. In a nutshell, Ong is a genuine epicurean .

Onetime, one of my elderly people from the 1980s possessed joked. Within the Office of UI Background, he said, "there are just two types of drunkards: drunk and drunk historians who review history."

The first course was only related to Ong. The second reason is for the others.
